For Jung, the anima is the unconscious feminine side each man carries in his psyche.
Now, while I have issues with Jung’s anima/ animus concept (because of its archetypal gender binary) it works brilliantly as a narrative metaphor in the SPN subtext.
Notice that both Castiel’s shadow-self, The Shadow (guardian of The Empty) and Dean’s shadow-self, in the forms of both Dark!Kaia and AU!Michael, have now appeared to them in female form:
Anima development, for men, according to Jung, means opening up to repressed emotionality.
And the emotionality Cas and Dean are repressing (a dying, “I love you, I love all of you….” and a mix-tape notwithstanding…)?
